This year’s Joe Biden-hosted US summit gives an idea of the extent to which the United States has fallen.
As the golden light from the Los Angeles sky shone one evening last week, a mariachi band played a cocktail party on the roof for corporate executives and government officials from two dozen countries. They met on the sidelines of the US Summit, a meeting that takes place every few years and begins the next day in the city. With the sound of the trumpet, the band “L Rey” began, the Mexican ranchira classic of the wounded Maximo. “I have no throne or queen,” sang Led Mariachi, “or anyone who understands me. But I am still king.”
