The US Open was the best start to the day of the big Boston Games.
In fact, it was a day we will always remember. We’re used to seeing the world of sports in Boston. But not many days have passed since so much was at stake for so many people.
From the moment Frenzy piped it to 10 until midnight when the Celtics would wrap up the game, Athens of America would have been the center of sports in the universe.
How did it feel to start this red letter day?
“Really cool,” Quinn said. “It’s just something you never thought of. And now it’s a fact. When I qualified, Owen went, ‘Dad, you’ll probably hit the first tee ball.’ And when the pair came up, he said, ‘Dad, you’re hitting the first tee ball.’
“It’s an incredible, special experience and an honor. To be one of the greatest majors we have in the United States to be a Massachusetts tour player and am I the guy who hit the first ball at the country club? Very special.”
Owen, a graduate of Lehigh University, was just starting his journey in pro golf, still clicking an hour after the round ended.
“The first T-shot at the US Open? At 57? Definitely incredible. And I’ll remember it for a lifetime. It’ll be even more memorable if he shot a couple tomorrow and then played on the weekend. Û”
Quinn equalized 10 and birdied 11 to take a very, very, very early lead, but her pot never warmed up. He hit 76, the equivalent of six overs, and could need about 68 on Friday.
Irritated when he was 76, he could have been more worried about the 9 o’clock tip in Game 6 of the NBA Finals at TD Garden.
“I intend to see but I can sleep!” He pleaded. “Why are they scaring us? What are they doing? Seriously!”
“He’ll probably be asleep by the end of the first quarter, realistically,” Owen predicted. “But I’ll see it. We’ll see if I can stand it. I got up at 4:15 today and came here for tea time but we’ll see.”
Fran, along with his wife Lori, daughter Katie and Owen, held the court in the players’ parking lot. Lexus was placed first, thanks to defending champion John Rahm, a few feet behind Queen. Nearby were the rides of Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka.
Adam Scott was walking around with his caddy. Surprisingly pocket-sized Rory McIlroy brought it closer to the top of the leaderboard after his 3 under rounds.
Although full of professional golfers, the course was filled with boys like the newborn super villain Phil McLesson, who looked particularly vicious with his shades, black shirt and logo embellished with a black hat. Winning the Masters in 2004.
US Open First Round Note: Rory McElroy made a strong start. LIV Golf Struggle
Phil – embroiled in controversy over being a key cog in the newly formed LIV Tour with the help of the Saudis – actually got a big thunderclap when it was announced on the first tee. He then padded it around the Brookline for a few hours and finished with 78.
The fans we saw did not waver in their support. They want Phil over the weekend. It enhances the atmosphere. What is another interesting background to such an event: the environment.
As we open our doors to a very special, very crowded place like The Country Club, we mash-ups never stop entertaining. He did not allow Tom Brady to join. He didn’t want to be out every time he came out, so according to a TCC member, he let Gisele in and when he wanted to play, Tom had to settle for being his guest. Û”
