The report claims that football is the number one sport in Wales.
Football has overtaken rugby as the number one sport in Wales, according to a new study submitted to the Football Association of Wales (FAW).
Independent research claims that football is both the most popular and sees more participants across the country than any team sport.
About 47% of respondents to a wide-ranging Welsh survey said they follow football, compared to 45% for rugby.
The report also states that about 40% of children in Wales play football.
This figure is higher than any other form of sport or exercise.
Of those, however, only 35% rated the quality of football facilities as good or above.
And Welsh football’s Elite Domestic League – Simro Premier – also showed signs of competition, scoring poorly with only half.
Still, the results will please FAW, who are looking to bolster the game in Wales after their international success, with Rob Page’s men’s team being one game away from their first World Cup in 64 years.
The research, conducted in April of this year, was conducted by the insight company Nelson as part of the UEFA development program, the governing body of European football.
One thousand nationally representative respondents from within Wales – including non-sports fans – formed the basis of the findings, which were welcomed by FAW Chief Executive Noel Mooney.
“Overall, this report is very positive and I am pleasantly surprised to see that the game we have been assigned to run is now the country’s number one sport of interest,” Mooney said.
The report claims that interest in football has grown since Wales reached the semi-finals of the 2016 European Championship, which is four points higher than 43% and a standard across the continent.
This shows that rugby has also seen an increase but now it is lagging behind its rivals – although according to the report, its image is more positive.
In terms of adult participation, exercise for fitness (24%) and swimming (19%) were more popular among respondents than football (17%) and rugby (6%).
However, less than half of those participants who play football do so for a club that suggests social and school football trends.
With regard to women’s football, in particular, the report says that Wales is more interested in rugby than football, although awareness of the women’s national team – which still leads its World Cup under Gemma Grainger. Looking for eligibility – has almost doubled since 2016.
The report explores a number of other issues, including one that views the Welsh Rugby Union’s image score more positively than the FAW.
“This independent report is a testament to the hard work of FAW employees, area associations, leagues, clubs, and volunteers across the country, raising awareness, interest, and impressions about our wonderful sport,” Mooney added.
“Combined with our strategic goals for Welsh football, this research provides us with insights on where we can thrive and what areas we need to focus on to improve.”
