Johnson, and Lang represent STAB in Team USA basketball trials.
The two local high school basketball stars may soon be wearing stars and belts as St. Anne’s Bellfield duo Kimura Johnson and Carter Lang prepare to compete in the Team USA basketball trials this week.
“It’s amazing, I literally can’t wait to get out there and be around the best people,” Johnson said. “The best people in my class, the classes below me, the country. The best people and the country able to represent me will be amazing. “
Johnson will compete with 40 of the country’s best players for 12 roster spots in the USA U17 Trials at Colorado Springs this week, starting May 26. 27 players are vying for a place on the 12-member list.
“I’m proud to represent,” said Lang. “I love the community I’m in and there’s a lot of great people here, so it’s great to represent just the basketball community in Charlottesville and Central Virginia. Looks like a little bit of a no-brainer. “
Both players are returning to the court from their first season after their sophomore season ended with COVID-19. Lang ended the first-team All-State Awards season in VISAA Division I. Johnson led the Saints in the VISAA DI state title game last season and ended the year with the Gatorade Virginia State Player of the Year award.
“This year, especially my high school season and getting all those compliments, is like a stepping stone to getting me to the top,” Johnson said.
With the start of the fruitful junior season, the recruitment drive for the STAB duo has also begun to heat up, with both being rated as four-star prospects.
Johnson, currently ranked 30th in the country by HoopGurlz for the 2023 class, currently has offers from Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, and Mississippi. Emerging senior guards hope to release a shortlist in the summer before starting work at the beginning of the school year.
Lang also recently added some offers as a possibility to be ranked No. 112 in the 2023 class, according to 247 Sports. The 6’10 “big man is currently looking at offers from Virginia Tech, Illinois, and Texas A&M, which he plans to do in the fall before the season. Seize the opportunity
“I think it’s really going to set this season. Hopefully, I can have a really great summer,” Lang said. Yes, but hopefully it will spread to the team. “
