International attitude towards the United States, NATO and Russia in times of crisis
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has pushed the war in Europe to an all-time high since the 1940s. In response, the United States and its NATO allies have provided weapons and training to Ukraine’s defense forces, while millions of refugees have fled to neighboring countries. The war has been the focus of international attention for months, and a new survey by the 18-nation Pew Research Center shows it has had an impact on public opinion.
The rating for Russia, which was already negative in most of the countries surveyed, has fallen further since the attack. In 10 countries, 10% or less of those polled favor Russia. Russian President Vladimir Putin’s positive views are in single digits in more than half of the countries.
In contrast, the attitude towards NATO is largely positive, and the alliance’s ranking has improved over the past year in many countries, including Germany and the United States, as well as non-member Sweden. Sweden’s attitudes toward NATO have grown sharply positive during the survey’s field dates.
Meanwhile, the overall rating for the United States is largely positive and stable. The average of 61% in 17 countries (including the US) is in favor of the US. However, there have been some changes over the past year, with favorable views rising significantly in South Korea, Sweden and Australia, and Greece. I have significantly decreased. , Italy and France.
