India retaliates against ‘biased’ US religious freedom report
Washington’s annual report highlights the provocative remarks made by government officials against Muslims and Christians.
India on Friday defended its record on religious tolerance and reprimanded the United States over its rights issues after a report accused Indian officials of supporting attacks on minority worshipers.
Washington’s annual report on religious freedom includes a rare – if indirect criticism of its emerging ally, documenting provocative remarks by public officials and discrimination against Muslims and Christians.
New Delhi’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Arundham Bagchi said senior US officials had made “uninformed” and “biased” remarks since the report was released.
“As a naturally pluralistic society, India values religious freedom and human rights,” Baghchi said in a statement.
“In our discussions with the United States, we have regularly raised issues of concern there, including racially and ethnically motivated attacks, hate crimes, and gun violence.”
Like its neighbor China, India has often been the target of foreign criticism of its record.
