Explain: Why is transgender rule of swimming important for the sports world?
June 19 (Reuters) – FINA, the governing body of global swimming, on Sunday voted in favor of new eligibility rules that bar transgender athletes from competing in women’s events.
This policy is the strictest by any Olympic organization and effectively prevents any transgender women who have reached puberty from competing in women’s competitions.
FINA also agreed to work towards establishing an “open” category for certain events that will ensure that all swimmers have a chance to compete.
