COYOTES won the Summit League Women’s All Sports Award
The top four finals of each women’s team, including three Summit League championships, returned South Dakota to the Dr. Helen Smiley Women’s All Sports Award. The Coyotes have claimed five of the last six Helen Smiley Awards.
South Dakota was runner-up in the Summit League Commissioner’s Cup standings. USD reached SDSU’s 106.5 with 100 points in the final standings. In all women’s sports awards, USD led runner-up SDSU by a margin of 70 to 61.5.
It was the women’s track and field and women’s basketball that won three Summit League titles this year. The track and field program won the indoor and outdoor titles for the first time since moving to Division I, while the women’s basketball won the regular season and tournament titles for the second time in three seasons.
Five Coyote teams have also been runners-up this season: Women’s Volleyball, Women’s Tennis, Women’s Swimming and Diving, Men’s Swimming and Diving, and Men’s Indoor Track and Field. Volleyball won the Summit League Tournament and reached the NCAA Tournament.
The Commissioner’s Cup is awarded each year to the member organization that collects the most common points for its placement in the league-sponsored games between its men’s and women’s athletic programs, while the All-Sports Award goes to these organizations. Is awarded to those who collect the most points. Men’s sports and women’s sports. The Men’s Award is named after Dr. William Stein Brecher, former Director of Athletics at Valparaiso, who guided the Crusaders from 1979-2004, while the Women’s Award is named after Dr. Helen Smiley, former Director of West Illinois Athletics, who has been with WIU since 1994.
